Murtagh’s Organic Farm is a family-run haven rooted in generations of care for the land. Our story began in the late 1920s when Jim Murtagh, my father, began dairy farming in Castlegaddery — just 3km from Ballynacarrigy and a short drive from Mullingar and Ballymahon. I joined him in the fields as a teenager, and in 1984, I made the decision to convert the farm to organic — one of the first in the region.
In those early days, we supplied premium organic lamb to top restaurants across Ireland and even to Marks & Spencer. But in 2010, I stepped away from livestock and joined the Farming for Nature project — a move that deepened my commitment to biodiversity, habitat protection, and nurturing the land for wildlife.
Today, the farm spans 125 acres of certified organic farmland and woodland, set along the banks of the Royal Canal and the Greenway. It is a peaceful, richly biodiverse landscape that we are proud to share.
On New Year’s Eve 2020, my wife Gráinne and I began a new chapter — opening the farm to the public. Our shared passion lies in education: helping children and adults alike discover the incredible nature and biodiversity right on our doorstep, while promoting awareness around sustainability and renewable energy.
In June 2022, we were honoured to be accepted into the Farming for Nature initiative through the National Parks & Wildlife Service — supporting our mission to enhance and protect the natural habitats under our care.
In Autumn 2025, we moved the farm to the Old Parochial House, which is located in the village of Ballynacargy, on 14 acres of farmland & forestry and also located on the banks of the Royal Canal.
Through seasonal events, guided farm walks, and school visits, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife, conservation, and responsible farming. And looking ahead, we plan to introduce farm-based accommodation — offering visitors a truly immersive experience with direct access to the Royal Canal Greenway.
